Join Montalvo Culinary Artist Andrea Blum and ethnobotanist Alice Encinas Duvernell for a fun and fascinating hydrosol and aromatherapy-making workshop!
Participants will use plants collected from Montalvo's grounds and learn how to distill them into therapeutic hydrosols and precious essential oils in a traditional Portuguese copper still. In exploring the world of essential oil, we will come to a deeper understanding of the hidden properties of these botanical distillates and how they can be used for culinary, medicinal, and cosmetic uses.
This is a rare opportunity to receive hands-on training in the distilling technique from an expert in the field. Duvernell has studied botanical extraction techniques worldwide and has developed curriculums for teaching about distillation and aromatherapy; she specializes in organic cosmetics, aroma-edibles, and natural home products.
This day-long workshop (10am-4pm) will include step-by-step instructions for making culinary hydrosols, aroma honeys, and essential oils at home; all necessary materials are included in the registration fee, and students will bring home their own bottle of freshly-distilled hydrosol.
There will be a lunch break mid-day; please bring your own lunch. Light snacks and water will be provided throughout the day.
